A Girl in Taiwan

Hi everyone! I’m Ona. I’m assuming pretty much everyone following this site will already know who I am but just in case you’ve stumbled upon this page without knowing me, here’s a brief introduction.

I was born and raised in Asheville, North Carolina, in the Blue Ridge Mountain region of the Appalachians of Western North Carolina. I decided to stay in my hometown for college to play Division 1 volleyball for the UNC Asheville Bulldogs. While at UNCA, I studied abroad in both Granada, Spain and Tokyo and Kyoto, Japan. I majored in Political Science and International Studies and I minored in Asian Studies, presenting my senior thesis research at a national student research conference in Washington, DC and publishing my work in Dignity: An Undergraduate Human Rights Journal. After graduating as the UNCA Valedictorian, I spent a year working with a local government in rural Murphy, North Carolina through an AmeriCorps program called Lead for North Carolina. During my year in Murphy, I connected deeply with the local community and helped found a youth development program: the Mayor’s Rising Stars. This work, as well as experiences coaching youth volleyball, teaching astronomy to community youth as a Lookout Observatory docent, and working as a course ambassador in college, led me to my current role as a Fulbright English Teaching Assistant (ETA) in Chiayi County, Taiwan. I’ve created this blog to document my time in Taiwan for the next 11 months and I hope to use it as a personal space for reflection and community while I am away from home.

Took AP World History and My Life was Changed

AP World History introduced me to the Chinese Dynasties, a global UN club called Girl Up where I met my pen pal, Aaron, from Tamil Nadu, India, and piqued my interest in global travel and cultural exploration.

Return to UNCA from Studying Abroad in Granada, Spain

Studying Spanish in Granada was one of the most difficult things I’ve ever done. After I completed my studies in Spain, I decided I wanted to take all the hardest courses back home because I could learn anything if it was taught in English. I began taking Mandarin and studying Chinese history at UNCA when I got back.

Study Abroad in Tokyo and Kyoto, Japan

My Mandarin teacher was originally leading a study abroad trip to Hong Kong and Taiwan that was canceled due to COVID restrictions. The trip changed to Japan and I was fortunate to receive a scholarship to study Japanese culture and history in Tokyo and Kyoto. Through this experience, I gained new friends from Ritsumeikan University and learned about Japanese student life in Kyoto.

Fulbright in Taiwan!

After my senior thesis research on Hong Kong’s democratization efforts led me to study the Sunflower Movement in Taiwan, and after a year of Mandarin study and taking every Chinese history class that UNCA offered, I knew I wanted to live in Taiwan. I applied for a Fulbright grant in October 2024 and received the news of my grant in May 2025. I am so thrilled to be in this incredible country for the next 11 months!

Ona’s Blog

Hi everyone:)

This is my first blog post of my time in Taiwan! I got this idea from a childhood friend and fellow Fulbrighter, @nunufilmsllc on Instagram (check her work out, she’s incredibly talented!), who has a blog that I followed closely in the months leading up to leaving for my own Fulbright. I’m hoping for this to be a space where I can really lay my heart bare and document my time here in a way that is authentic and reflective of the real me. While this is a site that I hope friends and family members can follow as a way to check in on how I’m doing, I really am mainly keeping this for myself as a way to track my own progress and thoughts throughout this journey that is ahead of me. I am very aware that I will likely never experience a year like this again in my lifetime and I want to do everything in my power to truly experience everything I am capable of within this year. This blog will serve as both a documentation of my time and a space to reflect on each week in an effort to keep myself on track with my goals, values, and progress. I want this year to be full of growth, exploration, adventure, intention, love, and resilience, and I hope I am able to share even a fraction of the joy and hardships that I will experience this year with you all. Thanks so much for following along.

Love,

Ona
